I like to think of bookshelves as a window to who we are and what we’re passionate about. That’s because bookshelves are not just for books. They’re usually the place to display your favourite family photos, sentimental trinkets you’ve gathered over the years, travel memorabilia, kids' art and more. But how can all of this work together in a way that’s also chic? Find my tips below:
Start big
This is my general rule for styling every corner of my home. Pick the largest books, vases, candle holders, artwork, lamps - any object that’s big in size and start by adding them first to your bookshelves. They will help define the space.
Add variation
Now it’s time to add visual variation. One way I like to achieve this is by placing books vertically in one nook and horizontally in the one right next to it. I also always steer away from filling every nook to the edge so they don’t feel overcrowded. Instead, I either leave some negative space that’s quite relaxing for the eye or pepper in smaller items like our Splatter Scallop Dish to hold our knick-knacks; a special photo frame, a pretty table lamp or a tiny vase with flowers.
Yes to artwork!
Adding a few paintings here and there or canvases is a great way to add colours, texture and visual interest to your bookshelf. I love buying them on Artfully Walls as they have a beautiful curated selection of artwork from independent artists that don’t break the bank.
If you’re into vintage or antique pieces, have fun browsing through Etsy and eBay. Check out this article where I share more tips on finding rare, one-of-a-kind art on a budget.
Think seasonally
In the colder months, I like to have our Redcurrant and Clove Candle lit in our bookshelf for ambience and for its cosy, wintery scent, along with terracotta accessories and dried flowers or a berry plant.
As we enter the sunnier months, I do a bit of a ceramics switch and I love how the Verona Vase in Pink & Blue and the Marbre bowls add vibrancy and colour to the bookshelves. Add fresh tulips or daffodils as the final touch.
Don’t forget the lighting
It absolutely makes all the difference, whether that comes in the form of lamps, fixtures or picture lights. When I was redoing my living room, I decided to add some sconces to the shelves, and I’m glad I did, as it creates this really lovely glow in the evenings.
