Rattan: a brief history, and how to clean yours

Rattan is an incredible natural material and one of the most sustainable in the world. It’s a type of palm tree native to tropical regions that replenishes itself every 5-7 years (faster than wood) and can last a lifetime.

Rattan or Wicker? What’s the difference?

Rattan and wicker are often used interchangeably, but they are actually not the same thing.

Our Rattan

Sharland England rattan originates from the Indonesian rainforest, before being harvested by hand. Rattan regenerates quickly, within 5-7 years, and if well looked after, should last a lifetime. This makes it an incredibly sustainable raw material with which to work. Sharland England uses two of the finest quality rattan types for production: Rotan Tahiti and Manau. After harvesting, our rattan is stripped and cleaned before being manipulated into shape by both steaming and torching processes. Next, the woven components are intricately assembled by hand, before being painted our signature Sharland England caramel tone.

Our Synthetic Rattan

Our Juliette furniture is constructed from colourfast resin fibres and powder-coated aluminium for weatherproof durability. Our frames are made from pure aluminium that won’t corrode or rust. They are carefully hand-painted with a mix of tones in a scratch-proof paint, to resemble the patina of antique rattan. The woven components of the Juliette collection are made from polyethylene, an all-weather weave that is UV and temperature resistant. As with our natural rattan products, our designs are handwoven for an elegant, antique aesthetic.
