You know I love a good statement floral centrepiece for my tablescapes and to bring colours and textures to a corner of my home that needs it. Over the festive season, I experimented a bit with floral arrangements and loved this easy and quite original DIY.
What You'll Need:
- A pretty bowl, choose a decorative bowl that complements your home décor. Ceramic, or even a unique vintage find can work beautifully.
- Berries as it’s winter now or any flowers you like that have a sturdy stem, like roses, dahlias, chrysanthemums, sunflowers and peonies.
- A flower frog, this is essential to support and hold your flowers in place, allowing you to create your arrangement. You can purchase flower frogs at your local florist or a DIY or garden supply shop and online.
- Blue Tack or florist’s tack
- Lastly, water of course, to fill your bowl.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Stick your flower frog at the bottom of your bowl using some Blue Tack or florist’s tack so that it stays in place
- Then, trim your flowers to your desired height and start arranging- I love to mix different flower types at different heights as this adds visual interest to my arrangement.
- Once your primary flowers are in place, you can add stems of greenery which also come in handy to cover any gaps and give your flowers a more lush appearance.
- Add water so that it covers the flower frog entirely
My tip: To make cut flowers last longer, you can add any of the items from the list below to the water:
-Sugar, as it acts as a source of nourishment for the flowers. About 1 tablespoon per litre of water can help them stay fresh.
-Lemon juice or apple cider vinegar (1-2 teaspoons per litre)
-Bleach (about 1/4 teaspoon per litre of water) helps prevent bacterial growth, which can clog the stems and cause the flowers to wilt more quickly.
-Vodka or any clear spirits you have at home can also help inhibit bacterial growth. Only a few drops are needed.
