The Swid Console table

I began designing this product at home from the English countryside, sketching away one Spring morning after the idea sprang into my head, very clearly. I have always found console tables just a little too deep. Most London townhouses (and any apartment, for that matter), have very narrow entrance hallways. But they all need certain things: a mirror, a lamp, and a console table.

So I made one: tall enough to house bowls of keys and small change, house plants and any other pretty things to greet guests. The scalloped hem is designed to feel a little like a tablecloth, and the loops around the rim are Sharland England’s signature motif. I use mine upstairs as a dressing table in the guest room, paired with our Letty slipper chair.

The golden rattan hue adds warmth to the corner of the room, under the window. But one of my favourite uses for the Swid console table is – of course – as a cocktail bar! For the Christmas holidays last year I filled different bowls with fresh limes, mint and pistachios, stacked the bottles and glasses on top, for guests to help themselves. As my Dad always says, it’s 6 o’clock somewhere!
